Marsa Alam is where Egypt’s Red Sea turns wild. Fewer crowds, healthier reefs, and marine encounters — sea turtles, dugongs, resident dolphin pods — that the busier resorts up north simply can’t match. If your hotel is anywhere between Port Ghalib and Hamata, here’s what’s on your doorstep.

A quick word on who we are: we don’t sell hotels or flights. We plan your days. Tell us where you’re staying, who’s travelling, the ages in your group and your budget, and we’ll build an itinerary around you — booked ahead of your trip or arranged after you arrive. Abu Dabbab Bay: Turtles and (If You’re Lucky) a Dugong

A sheltered, sandy bay famous for the giant green sea turtles that graze its seagrass meadows — you snorkel out from the beach and simply float above them. Abu Dabbab is also one of the few places on earth with a semi-resident dugong. Sightings of the dugong are luck; sightings of turtles are close to routine. Shallow, calm and reachable by road, it’s the single best marine day out for families in the area.

Dolphin House — But Which One? Samadai vs Sataya, Honestly

Here’s something most listings won’t tell you clearly: there are two ‘Dolphin House’ reefs, and they are very different days out.

  • Samadai Reef — the near one. A protected horseshoe reef reached by a shortish boat ride from the Marsa Alam marina area. Visitor numbers are capped by the environmental authority, the lagoon is calm, and it works well as a family trip.
  • Sataya Reef — the far, spectacular one. Departs from Hamata port, deep in the south (roughly 110 km from Marsa Alam city), followed by around two hours’ sailing. It’s a full, long day — and the reward is one of the Red Sea’s great wildlife experiences, with large pods of spinner dolphins in open water.

Our honest steer: families with younger children or anyone short on time should choose Samadai. Confident swimmers chasing a bucket-list morning should set the alarm for Sataya. Both are wild-animal encounters — no operator can guarantee dolphins, and we won’t pretend otherwise.

Wadi El Gemal National Park

South of Marsa Alam city lies one of Egypt’s largest protected areas — desert valleys, mangrove coastline, Roman-era emerald mines and the Ababda Bedouin culture that still calls it home. Jeep safaris, snorkelling at Sharm El Luli’s white-sand bay and Bedouin dinners can all be combined into one day. If your picture of Egypt is all pyramids and pool bars, Wadi El Gemal is the correction.

Port Ghalib and Easy Evenings

Ten minutes from the airport, Port Ghalib is the area’s polished marina town — waterfront restaurants, an evening stroll and boat departures. It’s the easy first-evening outing, and a good base point for several of our sea days.

When to Go

Marsa Alam is warm all year. For calm seas and comfortable deck weather, October to May is ideal; summer brings the warmest water and the liveliest reefs. Turtles at Abu Dabbab are present year-round.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is swimming with dolphins in Marsa Alam ethical?

The encounters here are with wild dolphins in open sea, inside managed reserves with visitor caps and marine-police oversight — a world away from captive dolphin shows, which we do not sell. We keep respectful distances and follow reserve rules; the dolphins choose whether to come close.

Can non-swimmers enjoy Marsa Alam boat trips?

Yes — life jackets, guided snorkelling support and shallow stops make most trips accessible, and we’ll steer you to the right one if you tell us your comfort level.

How far is everything from Marsa Alam airport?

Port Ghalib is about 8 km away, Marsa Alam city around 65 km south, and the Hamata departure point for Sataya about 110 km south of the city — which is why Sataya days start early.
