If you have typed this question into Google, you deserve a straight answer, not a brochure. We are a local team who have welcomed guests here since 1998, including through years when this question was asked a lot. Here is our honest picture.
Start with the official source, not with us
Before any trip, check the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) travel advice for Egypt. It is updated regularly, it is specific about regions, and your travel insurance is tied to following it. The Red Sea resort areas, including Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh and Marsa Alam, have long been where British tour operators run their programmes. Read it yourself before you book anything, from us or anyone else.
What daily life actually looks like here
The resort towns are built around tourism and are policed accordingly. Hotels, marinas and excursion meeting points have security screening as standard, and the tourist areas are busy with families from Britain, Germany, Italy and beyond essentially every week of the year. Walking the marina in the evening, taking a boat trip, haggling in the souk: this is ordinary daily life here, not an act of bravery.
No honest person will tell you any destination on Earth is completely without risk. What we can tell you is what we see every day: a working holiday coast where the overwhelming majority of visits are entirely uneventful, in the best possible way.
Sensible precautions (the same ones we would give for anywhere)
- Use licensed operators for excursions and check that boats carry life jackets. Any serious operator will answer safety questions happily; walk away from anyone who is vague.
- The sun is the most real everyday risk here. Hats, factor 50 and water, especially for children and especially between June and September.
- Swim at flagged beaches and follow the guides’ briefing on reef trips. Reef shoes help on rocky entries.
- Use hotel safes for passports, as you would in Spain or Greece.
- Roads between cities are driven at night by convoys of tour buses constantly, but if long drives worry you, tell us; we will plan flights or shorter routes instead.
Our own standard, plainly
Our licences and insurance are current, our guides are certified, and in more than 25 years our answer to a worried parent has never changed: we take your family where we take our own. If a sea day is cancelled for wind, it is cancelled; we do not gamble with weather calls.
