Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh? It’s one of the most common questions travelers ask before planning their Red Sea holiday. While both destinations offer beautiful beaches and exciting excursions, they provide two completely different travel experiences. From diving and desert adventures to nightlife, family activities, and day trips, here’s an honest comparison to help you choose the destination that suits your perfect vacation.
The geography, in one minute
Hurghada sits on the Egyptian mainland, on the west coast of the Red Sea, with the Eastern Desert mountains behind it and the Nile Valley a drive away.
Sharm El Sheikh sits on the tip of the Sinai Peninsula, between two gulfs, with dramatic granite mountains pressing right up against the coast.
That one difference decides almost everything else.
Choose Hurghada if you want Egypt’s greatest hits
Because Hurghada is on the mainland, Luxor is about a four-hour drive: the Valley of the Kings and Karnak as a day trip. Cairo and the Pyramids are around an hour by air. No other Red Sea resort combines beach and ancient Egypt this easily.
Hurghada’s coast is a long chain of family resort towns: El Gouna, Sahl Hasheesh, Makadi Bay, Soma Bay, each with wide sandy beaches and shallow, calm entries that suit young children. The sea trips here (Giftun Island, Orange Bay) are beach-island days: white sand, shallow turquoise water, easy swimming.
Choose Sharm if the sea itself is the holiday
Sharm’s reefs are the headline. Ras Mohammed National Park and the Tiran straits offer some of the most celebrated wall reefs in the world, minutes from your hotel. The landscape is more dramatic too: desert mountains, Dahab up the coast, and St Catherine’s Monastery with Mount Sinai a long day trip away.
The trade-off is honest: Luxor is not a practical day trip from Sharm, and Cairo requires a flight. Sharm is a deeper Red Sea experience, not a base for touring Egypt.
Quick honest comparisons
- Young families: Hurghada, for the shallow sandy bays and shorter transfers.
- Snorkellers and divers: Sharm, by a nose, though Marsa Alam beats both for wild marine life.
- History lovers: Hurghada, because Luxor is reachable.
- Dramatic scenery: Sharm, without question.
- Flight time from the UK: effectively the same, around five to five and a half hours.
- Weather: both are sunny essentially all year. [See our month-by-month weather guide.]
